Agricultural Meteorologist

 

Lethbridge, AB; Winnipeg, MB (CAN) Minneapolis, MN (USA), Campinas, SP (BRA)

 

As a part of the Agronomy R&D team, the Agricultural Meteorologist will leverage their weather and agronomic expertise to guide our field-centric weather approach and assist modelling efforts.  Candidates must have extensive experience in agro-meteorology and direct experience with modelling applications.

 Duties may include the following:

  • Lead the direction of internal development for weather observations including analysis, interpretation, and quality assurance/quality control;
  • Support Digital Agronomy and Product teams in Farmers Edge's global corporate weather strategy;
  • Advise Product team members on end-user product requirements for weather-related products;
  • Support Engineering and Agronomy R&D teams with hardware strategy for in-field data collection;
  • Develop innovative applications to agronomic modeling efforts;
  • Collaborate with other experts to develop prototype for pest/disease and crop forecasting models;
  • Provide independent reviews and support for modelling activities by research colleagues;
  • Cross-functional meetings with managers, Product, and Digital Agronomy and software development teams;
  • Resource planning and scheduling;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Education and Experience:

The ideal candidate would be strong in the following areas:

  • Advanced degree (M.Sc./Ph.D.) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering or a related discipline;
  • Experience working with meteorology models and crop production applications;
  • Experience deploying and maintaining in-field sensor technology;
  • Experience on cropping systems modelling and managing large datasets;
  • Knowledge of statistical methods, and spatial analysis;
  • Familiar with current agricultural practices and precision farming;
  • Proficiency in R, Python, ArcGIS, and QGIS is a plus;
  • Familiar with meteorological reanalysis datasets;
  • Able to work under minimal supervision and apply sound judgment;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills essential for success;

  • Ability to work in Canada, USA or Brazil;
  • Ability to travel to Canada and USA;
