Software Developer (Modelling) 

Location: Lethbridge, Alberta

Reporting to the Software Manager (Modelling Team), the Software Developer will join a team responsible for creating and maintaining back-end services and agronomic empirical models across the globe including:

  • Nutrient recommendations
  • Crop Staging, Crop Disease, Crop Pest modelling
  • Soil sampling data
  • Historical Weather data

These services are accessed as a set of HTTP endpoints, and are used by other applications within Farmers Edge to provide the tools needed to make educated agronomic decisions. 

What you'll be doing:

  • Interface and parse data with other external systems via HTTP services.
  • Develop algorithms used in simulations.
  • Validate simulated results against real and test data.
  • Gather information through interviews, focus groups, online research, etc.
  • Participate in daily planning activities such as Scrum meetings.
  • Improve deployment processes by developing RESTful API.
  • Develop and document tasks and performing code reviews
  • Document internal and external source code.
  • Automatic and manual testing (Including end to end and unit testing)
  • Back end programming / coding and following software development life cycle
  • Troubleshoot deployed applications
  • Participate in internal management meetings.
  • Collaborating with the Machine Learning, User Interface, Geospatial, Research and Development, Web services, Quality Assurance and other teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll need to succeed:

Experience in:

  • Python / Django Development
  • Basic working knowledge of HTTP services
  • Quality Control Tools / Testing Frameworks
  • Revision control software (e.g. Git)
  • Unit testing
  • Agile / Scrum / SDLC methodologies

Would love to see:

  • Education in Computer Science with a focus on programming (Diploma, Degree, or Graduate studies)
  • An Education in Biological, Agricultural, or Geographical Science with a strong background in computer programming may be considered.
  • Agricultural knowledge considered a strong asset
  • Geospatial, GIS, Remote Sensing background would be a strong asset
  • Comfortable working in both a cooperative environment and be willing to work independently on assigned tasks
  • Creative, motivated, resourceful and passionate about what they do
  • Previous experience considered a strong asset
